Immersive Space of Jellyfish

<<back | next>>
This corner is about the world of the jellyfish, who float at the mercy of the great ocean currents. A soothing, rejuvenating space where you can feel as if you are swimming with the translucent jellyfish in a quiet, softly moonlit sea.

Moon jelly fish

Range: in temperate to tropical waters all over the world

This kind of jellyfish is most commonly found in the ocean around Japan. Sometimes a massive outbreak of the moon jelly occurs near a river mouth. The moon jelly is also called “four-eyed jellyfish” because of the four eye-like gonads seen through the body

Blue jellyfish

Range: from Indian Ocean to Pacific Ocean

The blue jellyfish is biologically similar to the spotted jelly. Its umbrella can grow up to 10 cm.

What Do Jellyfish Feed On?

Swimming in unique motion, jellyfish feed on a variety of food depending on the species.

The moon jellyfish has short, slim tentacles around its umbrella and they use the cnidarian venom produced from them to catch and eat plankton. In contrast, the brown jelly fish has longer and thicker tentacles which can produce stronger cnidarian venom, so they can catch small fish.

Beroe cucumis is a species of jellyfish that eats other jellyfish in one “bite”. This is why they have a big mouth. A species of the Spotted jelly living in Palau can live only with the ingredients generated by zooxanthellae which lives inside its body.
