Shiraho, the Miracle Coral Reef

The sea of Shiraho is located southeast of Ishigaki Island, Okinawa. Shiraho is now known to the world for one of the largest coral reefs in the world spreading there, which includes a community of Blue corals, large, stony Porites corals (microatoll), as well as species of Montipora corals. Its size is thought to be comparable to the Great Barrier Reef.

In 1972, outbreaks of Crown-of-thorns starfish(corals' natural enemy) had first occurred in Okinawa-Yaeyama Region. By 1985, the outbreaks had affected the ecosystems of almost all areas in the ocean.  The coral reef in Shiraho is one of very few areas in the region which did not suffer the effects from the outbreaks. The area has also played an important role as a fishing ground and involved in the lives of local people.
